Are you familliar with a Yiddish song that just about every other line is 1,2,3,4 and it talks about a boy who doesn’t pray or learn, just sleeps and the narrator asks what will be with the next world????

I just heard about this song on a comedy show on one of the cable channels and thought I would look up the lyrics. Although my Grandmother and Mother spoke fluid Romanian we as children were not taught the language (a fact that I have always been sorry for). Anyway to answer your question about mamalige, it is what people now call polenta. Corn meal, water, and spices.

Thank you for Rumania, Rumania. I just watched the Michael Tilson-Thomas special on the Tomashevsheys. I remembered that my grandfather (born in Romania) had as one of his only records an album that contained ‘Rumania’. I thought it might be Tomashevky, and was pleased to hear the song by Aaron Lebefef.

What a lovely site this is and brings back so many memories of Booba and Zeida and my parents who both spoke Yiddish (but never taught us, as they used it when they didn’t want us to know what they were saying!). My father is still with us, though now has dementia and cried when I played him Lebedik Yankel and knew all the words – though said he didn’t remember what they meant! Booba used to sing Vi Aheyn Zol Ich Geyn. Please could you publish the words to Lebedik Yankel and help Dad remember, so I can sing along with him. Vos iz Gevayn iz Gevayn is Nisht Du!

Great blog. I have been looking for Yiddish lyrics. My children and I joined a group that sings every Shabbat at a local retirement home. The folks enjoy Hebrew and English songs, but they really enjoy Yiddish songs.
Recently, I was looking for the lyrics to Shvigaro. I was able to find videos with various singers singing the song, but the closest I could find to lyrics was one video which looks like it came from Israeli TV with subtitles in Hebrew and another site with text in English, though the words were not the original (I guess they didn’t want to attempt to translate some of the descriptions in the songs … )
I manage to piece together the words, based on the song as sung by Dudu Fisher and by Colin Shachat (they don’t quite sing it the same way.) If interested, write me and I’ll send it to you in Yiddish (I didn’t transliterate it).

Maybe you came across it in the meantime: patlazhele = that’s eggplants, we use the term patlican in Turkish and Bulgarian. We fry them or fill them with crude meat. It’s so funny to hear about mamaliga. After the war people in Bulgaria ate that as they didn’t have wheat.
